Mareva Injunction

Mareva Injunction formed in late 2002 and performed twice during 2003: at Doc's in Southsea on 14 June and Cheriton Village Hall in Cheriton on 6 September. They have not convened since but see themselves as dormant rather than split - they have not ruled out another Land Registry gig.

Below is an extract from Landlines (the Land Registry magazine) in Summer 2003 which may serve
as a biography for the band.

2003 Math (Guitar and Vox).

"Math explains how the band was born:
I thought about getting a new band together last November. I'd made a few attempts before but got no further than rehearsal stage. This time I was determined. I just needed to find some good musicians and think up a catchy name. Next thing I knew, along came Simon and Andy.

Simon Jones, casework and dedicated batsman, stopped me one day to discuss writing and we swapped CDs. I was impressed and asked if he'd join the band. He accepted and I soon realised he's an excellent keyboardist, an adept improviser and a good vocalist too.

Andy Turton, plans officer and stalwart goalkeeper, joined soon after. He last played live at a Harrow office gig with the band, Apocalypse Pavarotti. Andy's been perfecting his playing ever since and is now an accomplished bass player.

Simon says:
I've been writing material and playing keyboard since I was 17. I got speaking to Math and joined the band after I'd heard his CD. Then Andy joined too. We decided simply to give it a go and see what happened.

We started quietly in suburban bedrooms then cranked up the volume at local rehearsal rooms. Now we're booked to play at the Agency Relay in September at Cheriton Village Hall. We promise energy, original material and rip-roaring vocal performances. Look forward to seeing you there.

2003 - Simon (Keyboards and Vox).

Andy's analysis:
Math is a megalomanical despot, hungry for world domination and a multi-talented dude. Si has no faults apart from being far too photogenic to stand next to a couple of short, wide slapheads like Math and me.

2003 - Andy (Bass and Vox).

I have no idea why I'm trying to mix it with these two great talents. It's either make or break. I can only thank Land Registry for having given me a job to fall back on.

Math tells us about the latest band rehearsal:
'Everyone ready?' I ask, stooped over the portable CD player. My colleagues nod as I press the 'play button. After four clicks we crash in with the first chord. Rehearsal number four at the Casemates Practice Rooms in Portsmouth beings.

At the end of You Do Something to Me by Paul Weller, Andy plucks a descending bass run with aplomb. 'Excellent,' I murmur to myself. 'That was pretty good,' I remark out loud. Andy, still not satisfied, screws up his nose in disdain.

Halfway through The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC, I notice that Simon is playing two keyboards at right angles. He pounds piano chords with one hand and plays harmonica with the other. I am so impressed that I forget the lyrics. I improvise. No one notices.

'It's the best we've played so far,' I comment. After four proper rehearsals, it's time for us to play in public - a small venue and receptive audience would be fine."
